Chapter 16
COMPANION
Sister Carlotta and Anton are talking again. Their talk leads to the fact that
God can make something good come out of something evil.

An unusual occurrence occurred; the Dragon
Army had two battles in one day! Even more, the other army was allowed to cheat, got a 20 minute head start, and was allowed
to form up along the wall the Dragon Army would come out of. The Dragons still win, but a disgraceful win. Ender doesn’t
perform the ritual of surrender, nor does he follow any other ritual. He yells at Major Anderson for cheating, and then leaves.
Later that night, Ender confides in Bean all his troubles, problems, and worries. He then grants Bean his own special
toon. Bean is allowed to select certain people and put them into a special toon, still part of the other toons, but one that
could be called out if needed. Bean also wonders why Ender hasn’t been advanced yet, because he
has done everything he needed to and beyond.

Chapter 17
DEADLINE
The commanders are contemplating brining Achilles up to Battle School with Bean.

Bean has asked Nikolai and Shovel to
join his special toon, but Nikolai says that he cannot because he is having a hard time keeping up as it is, and having more
to do and losing a practice would just kill him. Shovel, however, agreed to be
in this special toon. Bean then headed towards Graff’s office to request permission to use school supplies to battle,
which of course he said no to. But Bean argued and gave Graff good reasons. Graff eventually gave in and let him have one
look around. Bean found a deadline (thin, strong cord) that is used for maintenance outside the Battle School.
Bean went back to practice and tried out his new toy. He found that no one could see the deadline, but it let him change direction
easily. The chapter does not have a happy ending, though. Bonzo ganged up on Ender in the bathroom and the two fought, Ender
hurting Bonzo so much he accidentally killed him.

Chapter 18
FRIEND
The teachers are talking about the incident with Ender and Bonzo. One teacher says
Ender shouild be iced, while the other say to sent him on to Command School. The consequnses are that if Ender is iced, Bean
wound't be able to go on either becuase he is not 'human'. They argue and we find our the Dr Volescu is Nikolai's doctor,
making him Bean's doctor as well.

They have another battle today, even after Ender's encounter in the bathroom. This
time, though, they are fighting two armies at once. Dragon Army goes to the Battle Room, but finds their view of the Battle
Room blocked by a cluster of stars. Ender sends Bean and his special crew out to use the deadline and see where the other
army is. They do this, and then trick the enemy by coming at them as a big formation and splitting apart at the last second.
Bean has five kids float down to the enemy gate then pass through. The other two armies didn’t know what had happened
for a second, and then realized they were tricked. After the battle, all toon leaders and assistants were spilt up and made
commanders of different armies. Bean went to Ender to tell him this, and found out that Ender was graduated to Command School,
not pre-command.
